History of Computer

Colossus, 1943

The first programmable digital electronic computer was developed amid great secrecy in the UK during the second world war, to break the Lorenz code used by German high command.

Colossus first worked in 1943 and was at work breaking codes by 1944. Ten of the machines were made in total.

This working replica was built by dedicated volunteer Tony Sale and now stands in the National Museum of Computing in Bletchley Park, near Milton Keynes, UK – home of the original machines.
