In a room with some people are talking to each other.If everyone is spoke a different language they would not be able to communicate. Likewise, if devices in a local network did not use the same protocols they would not be able to communicate.
Today the most common set of protocols used on local wired network is Ethernet..
You can say that Ethernet is a language to talk(connect) on local network.
Many vendors used there own protocol (set of rules for communication ) in networking in 70s but as time increase there no. reduce and today most common used protocol is Ethernet (2000).
